Watching Whales in Hermanus in 2010

Breaching Whale in Walker Bay, Hermanus

The other day I saw a post about whale watching from beatravelling: Onshore Whale Watching. It reminded me of an unplanned visit to Hermanus, near Cape Town a few years ago. By pure coincidence I arrived on the weekend of the whale festival. The festival is normally held towards the end of season when whales and their calves can be seen.

Of course he photos pre-date this blog, but I processed a few and uploaded them to a gallery: Hermanus During the 2010 Whale Festival.

Hermanus and Whales

Hermanus is a town in the Western Cape area of South Africa, a bit over an hours drive from Cape Town. Between July and November whales come to the area, known as Walker Bay, and are visible from the shore. The annual Whale Festival is a great occasion with many visitors coming to the town.

Watch this space, we may be there before too long.

Watching for whales can require a bit of patience. Here is a whale breaching.

    • That’s a pleasure and thank you. The festival does get a bit crowded, but it’s fun. We are obviously missing it, but will be there soon. I’m sure the whales will still be there 🙂

      • A festival sounds cool though. I could sit and watch for hours if I had time. A wool blanket, hot tea, and peace and quiet, that would have been heaven 🙂
