Vilanculos, or more correctly, the town of Vilankulo in the District of Vilanculos, Inhambane Province, Mozambique. Situated on the Mozambique mainland, Vilanculos looks on to the Bazaruto Archipelago.

Benefiting from local investment, Vilanculos has become a popular tourist spot. Easy access to the islands of the Bazaruto Archipelago, which include Bazaruto, Benguerra and Magaruque, provides for an exciting and interesting holiday. Attractions include deep sea fishing, scuba diving, snorkelling and boating in the beautiful area of the archipelago.

Vilanculos town is small, but offers all the basic amenities to self cater, while a number of bars, cafes and hotels in the area deliver a good sampling of local seafood, and peri-peri chicken. Outside the town a number of lodges and resorts have their own beaches and amenities - great for family groups. The islands of the archipelago also offer lodges and hotels, with transport provided by helicopter and boat.

The area is popular with Zimbabweans and some South Africans, who drive in, as well as more adventurous overseas visitors who fly in, typically via Johannesburg. the small but modern local airport has daily flights connecting with Maputo and Johannesburg, among others.

On our visit we stayed at the self-catering Archipelago Resort with a big group of family and friends. With beautiful views and big shady trees, most of the group found little reason to leave the resort, preferring to enjoy the beach, and the resort bar and restaurant, as well as braaiing under the trees.
