Sunrise in Leeds while on a business trip.

Sunrise in Leeds

Business trips are not always the best for catching good photos, though I have had a few good shots on work trips away. Here I had a hotel room with a balcony facing the right way. Though wintry and cool it was not cold enough to stop me catching this sunrise in Leeds.

At the end of October the timing of the sunrise is also great – no effort needed, simply get out of bed and take photos.

The sunrise light is looking great on the autumn colours in some of the vegetation.

Sunrise in Leeds Photo Notes

The power of the phone camera! And a bit of Snapseed. These were all taken using night mode on a Huawei Mate 10 Pro. A little of cropping a tweaking in Snapseed brought them to life.

While the raw images from my TZ100 Or DSLR may arguably produce technically better images, which will make better prints, the Mate 10 delivers great shots, very quickly ready to use online.

When taking a sunrise or sunset shot in cludy weather always looik to the other side of the sky. The colours in the clouds were subtle.

Location: Mercure Leeds Parkway Hotel

The Mercure Leeds Parkway Hotel is my normal choice of accommodation when up in Leeds. It is a very convenient hotel for local businesses, as well as a few local attrractions, and is only two miles from the Leeds Bradford International Airport.

With most of the modern conveniences one would expect from a modern hotel, the Brasserie has always delivered a good meal when I have been there. Certainly the best of the local hotels which I have tried.

First and Last Sunrise - Vilanculos, Mozambique

First and Last Sunrise

First and last sunrise. First I saw in 2016 and the last of our holiday.

First sunrise because it was the first I saw in 2016 (definitely not awake for a 4:30 sunrise on New Year’s Day!!).
Last sunrise because it was, sadly, the last morning of our little trip to Archipelago resort in Vilanculos, Mozambique.

Holiday accommodation with a view of the sea is always a big plus. A view of the sea, facing east just makes it so much better as the sun rises. Sunrise at 4:30 in the morning, however, can be an issue when it comes to getting up early and grabbing the camera. I did catch a couple of sunrises though.

See more sunrises in the gallery.

Sunrise over North Beach in Tenby. There is something special about sitting on the beach in the sunrise on a warm morning.

Beach Sunrise

There is something special about sitting on the beach on a summer morning watching the sun rise over the sea, lighting up the boats anchored offshore. Sometimes it is really worth making the effort to catch that beach sunrise.

Some would prefer to stay in bed. I would rather be out enjoying the morning and seeing sights like this, especially on a beautiful day on a summer holiday. This was taken on North Beach, Tenby.

Tenby is an historic town tracing it’s beginnings to the 10th century. During the 12th and 13th centuries a castle was built and the town walled. Some of these walls still stand.

The Victorians made the town popular as a seaside resort, which it remains today.

Taking Beach Sunrise Photos

Plan the Shoot

Photographically, sunrise shots can be quite tricky. You really need to know where the sun will be relative to the land and sea and whatever else is around, and do a bit of planning.

Get up early

Then make a point of being there early, having first checked that there is going to be a great sunrise. Grey wet days generally offer nothing interesting and are best spent having a lie-in. Low cloud on the horizon can block anything interesting, but cloud higher in the sky can deliver excellent reflections of the sunrise colours. Similarly, beautiful clear, cloudless skies can often offer very little to make a decent photo. Essentially catching a decent sunrise is a combination of a quick judgement call on the day, a little prior planning, and some luck.

It’s still great to simply be on the beach at the start of a nice day, though.

Sunrise Photo Books

Here’s an interesting how-to post – How to Photograph a Sunrise or Sunset.

I also use The Photographer’s Ephemeris on my tablet and mobile phone to do a bit of planning, so I know exactly where I want to be before I head out to the sunrise.
