A Grey Heron at the lake catching a bite of breakfast

Hunting a Grey Heron at the Lake

That grey heron at Brackley’s St James Lake! He eluded me for a long time. Indeed I still have few photos of him, though I have to admit that I spend much less time at the lake these days.

All of my efforts to take a photo had, so far, proved reasonably fruitless. The excellent weather on this particular morning seemed like a good opportunity to take the camera for a walk and track down this elusive bird.

The first Heron leaving.

Well, this morning’s visit proved to be a bit more productive. First off, I grabbed a shot or two of the heron, until he flew away. At which point I realised that there were in fact two of them!

The (second) grey heron parked himself on a temporary fence, put in place to protect some vegetation. He and and I sat and stared at each other for a while. He clearly was aware of me.

Eventually his need for breakfast caused him to reach into the water and grab a fish, providing me with a great shot of the bird and a reflection (at the top of the page).

Of course the time waiting for the grey heron to move was not wasted. Although I missed the landing of a flock of Canada geese, a white goose just happened to fly by.

Footnote

This is a refresh of a post originally posted on 6 August 2013. I still like the photo, but the post was looking a bit dated!

A pretty swan on the local lake.

Swan on the Lake – with a Photo Tip

Digging through some older photographs, I came across this one of a swan on the lake.

Spring and summer can often bring swans to the lake. They always make pretty sight, somehow very calming as they elegantly swim along.

Swan on the Lake – Photo Tip

Capturing the image can, however, be tricky. The reflection of the swan in the rippling water is great. in full colour it is very “busy” with all of the reflections in green water. Rather than take it to a full black and white image I like to desaturate the image until there is just a hint of the stronger colours left. Look at the swan’s beak.

On the Clifftops at the edge of the World on Caldey Island, near Tenby in Pembrokeshire.

Weekly Photo: Edge of the World – On the Cliff Tops

On the clifftops

It looks like the edge of the world. Taken during our 2014 trip to Tenby in Pembrokeshire. The photo was taken from the clifftops close to the lighthouse on Caldey Island, a short boat ride from Tenby.

Have a look at Bren Ryan’s challenge – Photo for The Week – 5 – Clifftops.

River of Clouds

A river of clouds in the moonlight.

I spotted this weird cloud formation a couple of nights ago. I’ve never seen anything like it.

Not a lot I could do about the pole – I have a very narrow sky view, adn couldn’t find another vantage point quickly enough.

Umhlanga Rocks Lighthouse on the kwaZulu-Natal coast, South Africa

Weekly Photo: Lighthouse – Umhlanga Rocks

Following on the lighthouse theme, here’s a shot of the lighthouse at Umhlanga rocks on the kwaZulu-Natal coast near Durban in South Africa.

Built in 1954, the lighthouse has always been automatic. It protects ships from the dangerous local rocks as well as providing a beacon for the nearby port of Durban.

The photo was taken on a Samsung Note 4 during our 2016 South African holiday. The view is from the Lighthouse Bar in the Oyster Box Hotel.

This is a second post for Bren Ryan’s Photo for the Week – 4 – Lighthouse challenge. Couldn’t resist it as this is one of my favourite beach spots.

Just a pretty sunset

Weekly Photo: Pretty Sunset

Missed most of the spectacular sunset yesterday but caught this late bit of colour in the sky.
Involved in a local function, we were inside at sunset. I was very disappointed when I saw other peoples photos the next day. At least I caught this pretty sunset!
